Strikethrough fiasco and permanent accounts

If you buy during the first 36 hours of the sale, we’ll donate $25 of your purchase price among four organizations: RAINN, Witness, the EFF and Creative Commons. And if you want your donation to go to just one of the organizations you can instruct us to do that too.

So each group gets 1/4 of $25 for each permanent account? Nice gesture, anyway.

Many people have expressed their outrage and dissatisfaction with Six Apart policies far better than I.

So, I’ll just use an image.

News postLJ Biz post

The process of backing up my journal, and transferring to my domain proceeds apace. Still deciding what other actions to take. (Whether to continue crossposting, or switch to InsaneJournal or GreatestJournal, or… dunno.)

You’re a tool, any fucking body can post a screen shot of the “review and submit” page, this does not show that you actually donated anything though. I’d bet my left nut that you never even went to the confirmation page.
BTW, I’m glad you’re leaving LJ, it’s one less uppity fucking idiot for people to have to deal with here.

    • HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Hate to disillusion you, but how about a screenshot of my “thank you” email?
I know you won’t believe, but I really don’t care. Have a nice day, moron.

    • An anonymizer from Germany. How quaint. You don’t have the guts to come forward directly then, your just a coward, plain and simple. One that doesn’t have the balls to say something even pseudonymously.

  2. so confused . . .

    • Hundreds of journals were arbitrarily deleted on the word of a neo-nazi lunatic group. Hilarity ensues.
They’re trying to add some positive spin to the permanent account sale by donating a pittance to a few charities.

      • Much hilarity. Went right by my radar. Thanks for the info.

        • I swear I don’t know how I find out about these things. I must read in strange places. <grin>
Oh, I meant to tell you – your dogs are SOOOOO CUTE!

          • good thing they’re cute or I’d kill ’em! I’ll be posting more photos of the little red devil later today. He’s growing!

          • good thing they’re cute or I’d kill ’em!
Oh, I know!! I’ve got four five of the little beasts myself. Four cats and a dog. :D Cuteness works in their favor. Especially in the morning, when they want their breakfast.

  3. I always found it terribly interesting that people can discuss murder, arson, or willful destruction, but if I discuss things that happened on my twelfth birthday, I can get my account suspended. (An “unload” account did get suspended – I forgot I had it, but it was kind of graphic. It also had a disclaimer in the first entry that indicated it was a personal life story, not a “what I want to do with my summer” thing.)
I can think of a lot of better places to spend $150. Make a direct donation, like you did, specifically.
How, precisely, are you backing up your journal? I’ve been looking into such things, even just to print it out en masse, but haven’t found a utility that’d do the job.

    • Oh, man I’m sorry they did that! Were you able to get it reinstated?
Backing up – there’s a few ways to do it, though they’re not all great.
      First, there’s LJ’s export: http://www.livejournal.com/export.bml
You can export it in XML (I’d recommend this, because it’s sorta human readable and other programs can manipulate it) or comma delimited. It does not get comments. The other drawback is you have to do it month by month.
Wordpress will import the xml files if you’re into that.
You can (if it’s not getting slammed) make a pdf of your entire journal here. This gets comments, but there’s not much you can do with it afterwards.
http://hewgill.com/software/ljdump/ should get posts and comments – I haven’t tried it yet, but I think I will.
http://fawx.com/software/ljarchive/ (windows only) will get posts and comments. I’ve played with this one (installed it on my xp box), and I don’t like it much.
I’m on OSX, and Xjournal supposedly will download the journal as well. I haven’t tried this one yet. I don’t think it does comments, but I’m not sure. This guy has a python script that’ll make xjournal’s archive easier to work with. Haven’t tried it yet.
Hope some of this is useful!
